American film star Willem Dafoe, a favourite actor of such directors as Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson, Oliver Stone, Alan Parker, William Friedkin, Lars von Trier, Paul Schrader, Abel Ferrara and Sam Raimi, will be in Montreal to accompany the showing of My Hindu Friend, the last film by Hector Babenco (Pixote, Kiss of the Spider Woman) , who died last month in Brazil. “We are especially proud to present the last film of this great director,” declared Montreal World Film Festival president Serge Losique. “Willem Dafoe has had one of the most impressive careers in American and international cinema, over 108 roles and twice nominated for Oscars. His appearance in Montreal is a tribute to Babenco and to the art that he represented.”

Appleton, Wisconsin native Dafoe joined an avant garde theatre group and toured extensively with them for two years in the US and Europe, then became a founding member of the Wooster Group. He made his film debut with a small part in Michael Ciminino’s Heaven's Gate (1980), and went on to the Oscar-nominated role of Sergeant Elias in Platoon (1986) and the controversial title role in The Last Temptation of Christ (1988). Later films include Spider-Man (1989), Tom and Viv (1994), The English Patient (1996), Speed 2 (1997), Animal Factory (2003) and Manderlay (2005). Dafoe lent his voice for the heroic Gill in 2003’s Finding Nemo and co-starred in 2007’s Mr. Bean’s Holiday. He earned his second Oscar nomination for his work in Shadow of the Vampire (2000) . Among his more recent roles are those he supplied for Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), Anton Corbjin's A Most Wanted Man (2014), Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac: Vol. I (2013), Scott Cooper's Out of the Furnace (2013) Josh Boone's The Fault In Our Stars (2014), David Leitch and Chad Stahelski's John Wick (2014), and Chris Brinker's Bad Country (2014).

Dafoe is one of the founding members of The Wooster Group, the New York based experimental theatre collective. He created and performed in all of the group's work from 1977 through 2005, both in the U.S. and internationally. Since then, he worked with Richard Foreman in Idiot Savant at The Public Theatre (NYC) and later  the international productions of Robert Wilson's The Life & Death of Marina Abramovic abroad and Robert Wilson's The Old Woman with Mikhail Baryshnikov.  In 2014 he served as a member of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival.

Isabelle Adjani, icon of the French cinema, will attend the 40th Montreal World Film Festival  to accompany the showing Carole Matthieu the new film by Louis-Julien Petit (Discount) in the World Greats section.  ”One of the best known stars of international cinema, Ms. Adjani is an actress of immense versatility and talent and we will have the great honour of having her presence once again grace the Festival,” declared MWFF president Serge Losique.

Isabelle Adjani began at the Comédie Franaise in 1972 and thanks to television she quickly accessed to stardom. That year she played with Robert Hossein`s company in Federico Garcia Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba with Annie Ducaux. A co-production with the Comédie Française, the show was a hit and was restaged as well at the Théâtre de l'Odéon. Within a few years Adjani  was one of the company’s stars, playing in productions of Molière and Giraudoux.

She made her auspicious debut on the big screen playing the rebellious young girl in Claude Pinoteau’s La Gifle (1974) and immediately became the hottest young actress in French cinema. She quickly starred for François Truffaut in The Story of Adèle H. (1975), a performance that earned her the first of two nomination for the best actress Oscar.  Adjani is a five-time winner of the César Award for Best Actress. She won for Possession (1981), One Deadly Summer (1983) Camille Claudel(1988), La Reine Margot (1994) and Skirt Day (2009), making her the only actress or actor  to have five wins in the acting categories. Her second Oscar  nomination for Camille Claudel, made her the first French actress to receive two nominations and also the only actress in history to receive two nominations for non-English-language roles. She also won Best Actress at the 1981 Cannes Film Festival for Possession and Quartet, and the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 1989 Berlin Film Festival for Camille Claudel. Among her best known other films are  Roman Polanski's The Tenant(1976), Werner Herzog's Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979), Subway (1985), Diabolique (1996) and French Women (2014).

Despite the shadows and questions around the Festival's fate a huge crowd was waiting for Serge Losique at the Imperial August 25 at 7.00pm  for the official opening of the 40th edition (the toughest since the hotel and cinema partnerships fell at the last minute).

Nevertheless guests of the festival were flocking on the red carpet, with elegant attire, waiting for the late Jury (some of them were late at the airport) and the complete cast and crew of Kiss me Like a Lover by Andre Forcier (a very spectacular world premiere, with a 5 minutes applause session at the end). In our opinion the film should be a crowd pleaser by all means on the candian launch september 16.

UN FILM DE OUSMANE WILLIAM MBAYE
SYNOPSIS
