ANTONIONI, FELINI...CAPECE, Italian cinema revives at Montreal's World Film Festival

$

By Kenneth Fernandez

Spectacular camera work, engaging use of irony, superb directing and acting, herald Italian cinema’s return to glory. La Scultura, premiered at Montreal’s World Film Festival,  brilliant critique of hedonism and Mauro John Capece’s unique cinematographic style, held audiences enthralled

Mauro John Capece’s most recent work premiered at Montreal’s World Film Festival, marks a return Italy’s renown for cinematographic avant-gardisme, not to mention actresses whose skills match their striking beauty.

Capece, whose style is reminiscent of Fellini’s (in his masterfully daring use of the camera), used his cinematographic skills to depict the emptiness and inherent dangers of hedonism.

The lead female character masterfully portrayed by the illustrious Corinna Coroneo, leads a life of pure indulgence as a highly paid female “escort”.  Her encounter with a sculptor of tremendous ability, played by Adrien Liss, leads to an emotionally charged relationship, in which neither can do without the other.

In the face of rising economic problems, which leave his best clients bankrupt, and in the wake of a society`s rejection of art, the sculptor finds himself without the means to live, while those who have, find themselves unable, or unwiling to pay for it.  The sculptor, victim of  both, changing attitudes towards art, and the economic crisis, ends up by engaging in prostitution in order to maintain the lifestyle to which he had become accustomed.  The tragic end, serves to underscore the emptiness of raw consumerism, and the degree to which love is central to the human condition.

While some are sure to misunderstand, or even misrepresent, the message this film so vivdly  conveys, La Scultura follows Alieno, Uomo di Futuro.  That film, no less exquistiely directed by both, Capece and  Pierpaolo Moio (which premiered at Montreal`s World Film Festival in 2008) was a stark critique of the drive towards automation, in which man and machine became one and the same, to the point where humanity is lost.

Mauro John`s unmistakable style represents a return to the glory days of Italian cinema –  that encapsulates the Italian soul –  probing, analitical, with rich plays on the emotions via exceptional camera work, complete with the presentation of ideas that are tinged with humour and irony, all of which serve to lead the viewer to question socially accepted conventions.

La Scultura is a MUST-SEE for all who are concerned with the direction society is taking, as well as for Italian cinema buffs.

My boss at Sony in the 90s, the celebrated British producer David Puttnam will be honoured by the Montreal World Film Festival, it was announced.  Famous for overseeing the making of such classics of the 1970s and 80s as Midnight Express (1978), Chariots of Fire (1981), The Killing Fields (1984) and The Mission (1986), Lord Puttnam will will receive the Festival’s highest award, the Grand Prix of the Americas, in a special evening at the 2015 MWFF.  “The Festival is honoured to pay tribute to the cinematic ‘culture’ that Lord Puttnam introduced in his three decades as a producer on both sides of the Atlantic,” said MWFF Chairman Serge Losique. “Anyone perusing the list of films that he generated cannot help but be nostalgic about a ‘golden’ era during which art and popular entertainment in the movies were happily married.”

Born in London in 1941, David Terence Puttnam, Baron Puttnam (he was knighted in 1995), had an early career in advertising and as an agent for the photographers David Bailey and Brian Duffy. But he made his indelible mark on 20th century cinema as a producer of such films as Bugsy Malone (1976), The Duellists (1977), Midnight Express (1978), Chariots of Fire (1981), Local Hero (1983), The Killing Fields (1984), The Mission (1986), Memphis Belle (1990) and Le Confessional (1995, directed by Robert Lepage). His films have won ten Oscars, 25 Baftas and the Palme d'or at Cannes.

He was Chairman and CEO of Columbia Pictures from 1986 to 1988. Among the notable films Columbia “green lit” or picked up during his tenure were Hope and Glory (1987), The Last Emperor (1987) and The Big Easy (1987). From 1994 to 2004 he was Vice President and Chair of Trustees at the British Academy of Film & Television Arts (BAFTA) and was awarded a BAFTA Fellowship in 2006. He retired from active film production in 1998 to focus on his work in public policy as it relates to education, the environment, and the creative and communications industries, but he continued to execute produce documentaries, most recently We Are the People We've Been Waiting For (2009) and I Am Chut Wutty (2014).

In October 2013 he stepped down as Chancellor of the Open University a post he was appointed to in 2006, following ten years as Chancellor of The University of Sunderland.

He is the Republic of Ireland's Digital Champion; President of the Film Distributors’ Association; Chair of the TSL Advisory Board; Chair of the Academic Board, Pearson College; a UNICEF Ambassador, and Adjunct Professor of Film Studies and Digital Humanities at University College Cork.

He was Deputy Chairman of Channel 4 Television (2006 - 2012) in Britain, and The Sage Gateshead (2007- 2012), founding Chair of the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA) and Chair of both the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television and the National Film and Television School for ten years. He has also served as a trustee of the Tate Gallery in London, the Science Museum and the Thomson Foundation, among other organizations.

Puttnam was knighted in 1995 and was appointed to the British House of Lords (where he sits on the Labour benches) in 1997. In France he was made a Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters in 1985, becoming an Officer in 1992, and a Commander in 2006.

The 39th edition of the Montreal World Film Festival will be held August 27 to September 7, 2015.

Synopsis

American choreographer Coen has come to Beijing to stage a modern dance drama about a woman who would rather die than lose her freedom. But he is frustrated by his failure to find the right candidate for the title role. Ye Men is an orphan girl from the Wa ethnic tribe in southwestern China, adopted and brought up by a local woman in a free and easy atmosphere. One night during a village revel, Ye Men has a fight with the bullying princess of the tribe and cuts her face with a knife. Fearing the chief’s revenge, Ye Men has to leave the village and bids farewell to her childhood sweetheart, Ai Yong, who has promised to take care of her and her foster grandma. Ye Men ends up in Beijing working in a restaurant as a waitress and singer, in an attempt to break away from tribal customs. Coen, who happens to be dining in the restaurant, witnesses how Ye Men handles a harassing male customer, and is duly impressed. He leaves his business card on the table. Ye Men shows up at Coen’s rehearsal hall and accepts his offer to join his dance troupe, only to be plunged into her romantic and pathetic destiny with Coen in this Beijing version of Prosper Merimée’s classic tale.

Synopsis

Marcelo Quevedo and his brother Carlos Quevedo were separated in childhood when Carlos left Cuba with his mother on a boat to seek a different life. Marcelo was left behind in Cuba burdened with the heavy duty of caring for his grandfather who was in poor health. Distance wasn’t the only issue that marked the separation of the two brothers; their mother couldn’t endure the rough trip and she died before the boat could reach its destination. More than twenty years later, Carlos Quevedo decides to return to Cuba to see his brother only to find that he is now stricken with ALS, a terminal disease that slowly immobilizes him to the point of a vegetative state. Regardless, the two brother’s re-encounter becomes an emotional roller coaster, a journey that oscillates between love, joy, truth, resentment and forgiveness, leading Marcelo and Carlos to a magical moment that soon dissipates with the inevitable farewell that separates them once again. Will this be their final parting?

Synopsis

1943. Polish countryside. Germany has begun sending younger and younger recruits to war. That is how Guido, a sensitive 17-year-old, finds himself in Poland. While serving near a small village, he tries to escape the brutality of the war in the attic of the post where he listens to forbidden jazz records and dreams of better times. Meanwhile, Romek, a local Polish boy, tries to help his single mother by working as a railway engineer’s assistant and win the heart of Franka, the daughter of the well-to-do farmer. While helping drive the locomotive, Romek makes regular stops at an abandoned train station where German trains to death camps dispose of suitcases and other personal items of the Jewish victims. Unaware of the scope of the tragedy they represent, the items make little impression on Romek. When he salvages a discarded grammophone, fate brings him, Franka and Guido together. That one moment will change each of their lives forever. Then Romek meets Bunia, a Jewish girl who has managed to escape one of the death trains and he becomes her only hope for survival. The unlikely connection of these four leads to a series of tragedies. Who will survive is not entirely in their hands.

Jean Jacques Annaud exclusive video Interview on his latest film Wolf Totem

Laura Blum and Editor in chief Bruno Chatelin sat down with french icon director Jean Jacques Annaud about his new phenomenal film Wolf Totem, shot over 18 months in Mongolia with wolves...Historical moment where a french filmmaker gets to direct a smashing box office based on the best seller of a chinese book.

We often hear that directing animals and children is hell on a filmmaker. So why is Jean-Jacques Annaud nostalgic about the 200 horses, 1,000 sheep, 35 wolves and smattering of young humans he worked with for his new picture Wolf Totem? Maybe his fascination with wolves has something to do with it. As the title indicates, they're the real stars of this gorgeous 3-D spectacle.

Drawn from Jiang Rong's semi-autobiographical novel, Wolf Totem tells the epic saga of a young Beijing student who is sent to Inner Mongolia in 1967 during the Cultural Revolution. The ready student, Chen Zhen (Feng Shaofeng) teaches the nomadic herdsmen to read and write while he studies life in the craggy steppes. There are the man-made trappings of a society in flux and an inevitable affair of the heart, but the soul of the film is a romance between Zhen and the wolf pup he takes in and raises. It's only the cuddliest of the wildlife stories to unfold in this endangered region, where nature is literally on thin ice.

Annaud partly credits ecological awareness with the film's success in China. The Chinese-French co-production is among China's top-grossing films of all time, and it is rumored to be that country's submission for a foreign-language Oscar in 2016. This has all come as a pleasant surprise for the director. His 1997 film Seven Years in Tibet was denounced by the Chinese government for its portrayal of military brutality and for its favorable take on the 14th Dalai Lama; Annaud and his stars were banned from stepping foot on Chinese soil. And that's to say nothing of the controversy that Rong's Wolf Totem stirred in China when it came out in 2004. Ultimately it would go on to become a literary sensation like Mao's Little Red Book.

The environment had been something of a taboo subject in China prior to the book's release. But it struck a chord with readers who were increasingly alarmed by the daily scourge of pollution. When Annaud was approached to direct the screen adaptation, he quickly grasped its potential to heighten ecological awareness. Now, nearly a decade later, the green message is more resonant than ever. "Chinese viewers are suffocating," the director told me during his late August visit to New York not long after the explosions in Tianjin. "Even now on official television, you see people getting home with their GPS because they can't see their building."

Annaud, for his part, had a clear vision: to tell the drama of China's northeastern grasslands, he would have to capture the pulse of the wild. The film's aesthetic -- with rugged landscapes and mystical wind and sky -- was fashioned to convey how it feels to roam free amid the constant threat of predation. Human expansion presents a formidable foe in this Darwinian narrrative. But it's the wolf cast that relates the emotional charge of what's at stake. "What you have to get is the intensity of desire," said Annaud. "Wolves are hunters. If they they don't hunt, they die."

What techniques did Annaud use with his wolf actors? Fortunately, he had considerable experience in directing animals. The lead role to went to an Alaskan grizzly in his 1998 orphan tale The Bear, and the titular siblings of his 2004 adventure Two Brothers are tigers. For those productions, as for Wolf Totem, the methods he had developed while directing TV commercials and movies featuring babies came in handy. "Bascially it's the same trick," said the 71-year-old filmmaker. "You cannot ask a five-month old baby to smile, and you cannot ask a ten-month-old to walk to a certain mark and put the yogurt all over his face. But what you can do is think about how you could have this baby do it by itself, by its own instinct. And that will give you something very authentic."

Take for example the scene in Wolf Totem where wolves climb the wall of a sheepfold. Annaud recounted, "We had to train the wolves to climb the wall for them to know that they could do it, the same way that you could show a baby to climb on a stool in order to climb on a table where he could have chocolate cake." During the day the wolves were allowed within tantalizing distance of the enclosed sheep. For the night shoot, the sheep were removed, but the wolves were still licking their chops. To ensure that they hit their marks, wolf wrangler Andrew Simpson and his crack team of trainers took up strategic positions inside the fold and called to the wolves. More persuasively, hunks of meat were set out on a ladder inside the wall as a reward for the enterprising wolves who would scale it.

Beyond food-driven schemes, how did Annaud connect emotionally with his four-legged performers in order to direct them? The veteran of 13 features dug into some of his best-known titles to set up his answer. "My function as a director is to identify with the individuals I have in front of my camera," he began. "So when I do a movie like Quest for Fire, set in the Stone Age, I have to identify with a very primitive, pre-human creature. When I do a medieval mystery like The Name of the Rose, I am supposed to identify with the Italian monks of the 14th century. When I do a movie like The Lover, I have to identify with a 15-year-old girl who is going to discover carnal love in the arms of a Chinese man. So my job is to identify with my stars. And my job when I do a movie like Wolf Totem is to identify with wolves."

I pressed Annaud about his process with the pack alpha named Cloudy, cast as the leading wolf. What helped the Frenchman understand how this creature thinks, what he likes and dislikes? He mused, "If you read with an open heart, you will discover the wolf inside you. I know there is a wolf inside me, just as there is a man inside my friend Cloudy."

That was when it hit me: Annaud looks almost wolflike, himself. It's not only his silver pate, lupine nose and engaged eye posturing that give him an air of the majestic creatures he has devoted eight years to. There is also a carniverous intelligence, an animalistic charisma. The shape-shifter wanded the air and went on, "What I can say after all those years of directing two-legged animals and four-legged animals is that there is something in common, of course, and that the main emotions you feel in animals are the same emotions you feel in people: the territoriality, the desire for supremacy, for hegemony, for finding a love partner, for enjoying food and the necessity of food." Pawing his chin, he declared, "Fear is something that is absolutely in common."

For evidence, we need only watch the caravan scene where Zhen's caged pup reacts to him with sudden aggression. Annaud explained that three pups played Little Wolf. Each came up in a peer group trained for certain behaviors. The group that was exposed to Shaofeng from infancy performed in the scenes when Little Wolf is playful and cuddly. The snappish pup on the caravan wagon hailed from the group that was kept apart from Shaofeng and failed to forge a relationship with him. Cultivating the wolf actors spanned years. The first group was started in 2008 and reached adulthood in 2011 while the second group was timed to yield the teen wolves, leaving third group as the source for the puppies.

Finding trainable wolves wasn't easy. "The first challenge was to get wolves that would tolerate the presence of a human crew," said Annaud. Mongol wolves are an endangered species, and those that still run free are notoriously shy, he explained. The team found a solution at China's Harbin Zoo. They would raise captive pups from the bottle.

Three years later, one of these fur balls would emerge as king. It was soon after Cloudy took power that Simpson brokered an introduction with Annaud. As the filmmaker remembered, "This wolf looked at me, and he put his ears down, his tail between his leg, and he crawled towards me. I was very impressed. And then, in a very humble way, he went on his back and offered his belly." At Simpson's encouragement, Annaud gave Cloudy a caress, and in return received a lick on his finger. Next the wolf let his approval be known to his subjects. Annaud reenacted the scenario, gestures and all. "He rubbed his fur against my legs and then went to the pack and rubbed himself against the others to have them feel my scent."

From there the bond only deepened. "Day after day, Cloudy became more and more friendly, and the licking became more intense," said Annaud. "By the end of the shoot I had to change coats because he wouldn't start the scene without me getting into their space. He would run to me, put his two front legs on my shoulders and give me a full licking session for 10 minutes. He would bite my ears, bite my nose, bite my cheeks."

Asked if man and beast talked, the director replied matter-of-factly, "Yes, of course. He would go, "Hhhh, mmmhhh, gghhhh, hhhhhh!" Apparently the daily effusions rankled on Cloudy's wife, Silver. "After five minutes she'd start pulling my jeans, like saying, 'Hey, you guys, that's enough!' " recalled Annaud. By the end of the shoot Cloudy became downright moony. "He really reinvented the French kiss," Annaud cracked, adding, "The tongue of a wolf is so long!"

What so compelled Cloudy about the director remains a bit of a mystery. "My crew believed that, because he was the king of the four-legged band, he perceived that I was the boss of the two-legged gang," offered Annaud. "But Andrew Simpson, who is very knowledgable about wolves, said no. He said it's just something personal."

Personal as in his psychology or his scent? I wanted to know. "Probably something to do with body language, with the fact that I'm not scared," said Annaud. Or something to do with the fact that I liked this individual, because he was a very good actor, so I respected him."

Beyond the feel-good vibe, the filmmakers and trainers took constant pains to cultivate the trust of the alpha and his pack. As Annaud put it, "First, the wolves have to feel that those are their parents, their friends, their protectors -- that they will never, ever betray them. If you betray them once, you lose them forever."

That's why, when it came time to shoot the film's nocturnal blizzard sequence culminating on a frozen lake, there were no retakes with the same wolf. As Annaud explained, a dog may be game to fall through lake ice over and over, but a wolf only once.

In traditional Mongol culture, the wolf is a semi-god. "The wolf carries the spirit of dead people to what they call 'the eternal blue sky,' " said Annaud. "It was seen as an enemy, but a very respected enemy." It was also recognized as an essential partner in the region's ecosystem. "As the wolf population dwindles, the rats and marmots are free to destroy the grassland, and there's no more food, either for wolves or for humans."

What does Annaud most want Wolf Totem audiences to take away about wolves? "That they have a function in the world," he said, likening the dwindling species to the bees that both sting and sustain us. "By changing nature so much, we are in great danger."

Synopsis

THE THIN YELLOW LINE chronicles the journey of five men as they travel along an old road that links two forgotten Mexican towns. These men have been hired to paint the centre line that divides the road. They set out in an old ’76 pickup to cover more than a hundred and twenty miles of asphalt with a thin line of yellow paint. And they have less than a fortnight to do it. Toño, the man in charge, is a lonely 71-year-old. An old road hardhat, he helped to build thousands of miles of roads all around Mexico in the seventies. Now he has been put at the head of the crew who are going to paint the thin yellow line. This is how he meets Pablo, a 20-year-old who is passing by on his way to the United States to join his brother, who he hasn’t seen in four years. But this is a job where nothing ever goes as planned. It’s a story with straight lines, curves and potholes, just like life itself.

Fou D Amour by Philippe Ramos tells the story of man accused of two murders in France (1959).

Found guilty, he is condemned to death. He is guillotined. But his head begins to tell the story of his life. He was a priest. He loved life, he loved women, he loved God and preached every Sunday in his church. A perfect life! An admired priest, a wonderful lover, his earthly paradise seemed neverending... “In my earlier film, Ici-bas, I placed all the anguish of the world on the shoulders of the priest, imbuing the story with a suffocating gravity: the lively and seductive side to the murderer was largely discarded. This left me with a sense of unfinished business. With FOU D’AMOUR, just as a painter repeats his motif in order to explore new aspects, I reworked my ‘canvas’: this time, the happiness and pleasure would be voluble and would precede the devastating madness. So the film has a lighter, even humorous tone, before the colours change here and there to create a deteriorating atmosphere and a darkening mood, until it all turns black and tragic.” -- Philippe Ramos

To celebrate its 40th anniversary the Montreal World Film Festival is introducing a GOLDEN CHELEMof World Cinema: $1 million (US) in cash prizes will be added to the awards for its competitive sections. The prize money will be shared equally (on a 50/50 basis) by the producers and directors of the winning films, in order to encourage new cinematic creation. “No other festival in the world rewards its best films in such a generous way with 13 different prizes.” stated MWFF Chairman Serge Losique. With this initiative, MWFF ignites a “genuine revolution” in the organization of an international film festival.

A generous benefactor has undertaken to sponsor these prizes. He acknowledged the Festival’s s prominence and hard work, accomplished both at home and on the international scene over 40 years. The prize money will be deposited in-trust at a notary’s office in Montreal, so that it could only be used for that purpose at the MWFF’s Awards Ceremony on September 5, 2016.

André Forcier’s Embrasses-moi comme tu m’aimes will open the 40thedition of the Montreal World Film Festival, it was announced.  The film’s world premiere in the MWFF’s World Competition will mark the fourth time a Forcier feature has competed in the festival, having won a variety of awards for Une histoire inventé (1990), A Wind From Wyoming (1994) andCoteau Rouge (2011). Scripted by Forcier and Linda Pinet, the film was produced by Louis Laverdière and Linda Pinet.

“André Forcier has had a long history with the Festival including as member of the jury in 2006,” noted MWFF president Serge Losique. “We are happy to be hosting his work again.”

1940. The Second World War is raging in Europe. In Montreal, Pierre Sauvageau, 22, wants to join the army but he must take care of his twin sister Berthe, paraplegic from birth. This closeness awakens Berthe's sensuality who tries to seduce her brother. Pierre rejects her advances, but when he falls in love with Marguerite, the girlfriend of his best buddy, he is haunted by the fantasy of his sister. He would like to get rid of it, but the fantasy of Berthe is very persistent.

André Forcier’s singular world is once again populated with the cream of Quebec acting talent including Émile Schneider, Juliette Gosselin, Mylène Mackay, Céline Bonnier, Tony Nardi, Antoine Bertrand, Réal Bossé, Roy Dupuis, France Castel, Denys Arcand, Pascale Montpetit, Julien Poulin, Rémy Girard, Marc Hervieux and many others.

THE 40th MONTREAL WORLD FILM FESTIVAL will run August 25-September 5, 2016

Since its founding 40 years ago, the Montreal World Film Festival continues to offer film lovers and professionals a rich program based on cultural quality and diversity, innovation, independence and creativity. The success and international reputation of the Montreal World Film Festival are firmly linked to these principles and goals.

The World Film Festival is the only competitive film event in North America recognized by FIAPF, the International Federation of Film Producers’ Associations.

Influence Communication, Canada's top information broker and aggregator, which collects and aggregates 700,000 news items from around the world, analyzed fallout from the Montreal World Film Festival and concluded that it is "Quebec's standard-bearer in international media", the Quebec cultural event that is the most widely covered around the world.

The exhibition of films in movie theatres has undergone considerable transformation in recent years. For a long time, even ahead of New York and Los Angeles, Montreal was the North American city where cinephiles could avail themselves of the broadest selection of works from around the world. These days, the programming of commercial cinemas is dominated by blockbusters. Without the Montreal World Film Festival and its annual selection of some 400 films from 80 countries, the Montreal film landscape would be drastically reduced.

In addition to its program of screenings, the Festival presents a wide series of film-related activities. We invite you to consult our web site regularly for details.

Bon festival!

Serge LOSIQUE
President
