C'est l'histoire des premières vagues d'immigration italienne en Suisse, alors que les panneaux indiquant «Interdit aux chiens et aux Italiens» étaient «acceptables». Mais c'est aussi l'histoire d'une jeune chanteuse et de son incroyable succès. Carmela, don Gregorio, Gabriella et Lorella sont quelques-uns de ces Italiens qui ont été touchés par sa célèbre chanson Non ho l'età,  alors qu’ils cherchaient à se faire une place dans un pays peu accueillant. Ce film constitue un rassemblement affectueux de souvenirs liés à une période difficile qui a néanmoins réussi à susciter  de la solidarité.
This is the story of the first waves of Italian immigration to Switzerland. When signposts that read “Dogs and Italians forbidden” were “acceptable”. But this is also the story of a young singer and her incredible success story.  Carmela, don Gregorio, Gabriella, and Lorella are some of those Italians that were touched by her famous song Non ho l’età   while trying to settle in a country that did not exactly welcome them with open arms. Olmo Cerri’s film is a deeply affectionate recollection of a difficult time that nonetheless managed to breed solidarity.

Ils philosophent en route sur les combats de coqs, les suppléments alimentaires ou bien ils se changent dans les salles crasseuses de l’arrière-scène de boîtes de nuit d'Acapulco tout en rêvant au jour où ils atteindront la célébrité.
The stories of six musicians meander along curvy federal roads through the breathtaking scenery of southern Mexico. The protagonists do not perform in the spotlight of big stages but earn their living with guitars and accordions in the narrow aisles of beaten country buses. Dripping with sweat, they drown out geriatric motors while slipping through the tightening net of inspectors and controls. Beyond the roadside ditches, they philosophise about the qualities of fighting cocks, tout nutritional supplements or dress up inside filthy backstage rooms of Acapulco nightclubs while dreaming of their leap to stardom.

Des milliers de villageois amènent des bovins, des chameaux et des chevaux pour les vendre. Les artistes folkloriques, les musiciens et les manèges apparaissent comme un mirage dans le désert, seulement pour disparaître avec la décapitation de la cinquième tête de Brahma.
“All year one sensed a hidden tension, all year something was going on in preparation for those days, as if the ultimate purpose of the year was to home in on those three days.” During the full moon in the month of Kartik, the town and the nearby dunes become an enormous fairground. Thousands of villagers bring cattle, camels and horses to trade. Folk artists, musicians, Ferris wheels and merry-go-rounds appear like a mirage in the desert, only to vanish with the decapitation of Brahma’s fifth head.

When Sadig, who was found guilty of committing high crimes and was sentenced to long-term imprisonment, gets released after 17 years, he finds out that his beloved ones had passed away and his native town. Incidentally, Sadig meets his childhood friend and together, under great danger, they cross the line of military contact, and reach their native village.

SAMURAI’S PROMISE

Shinbei is exiled from his clan for investigating its activities too closely. Eight years later, when Shinbei’s dying wife pleads with him to go to help his former best friend, Umeme, he returns to the clan. Infighting has produced turmoil within the clan, allowing Shinbei to discover the truth behind incidents involving his wife and his friend. Confronting Umeme, he understands the reason for his wife’s last wish.

SAMURAI’S PROMISE is a film on greed and corruption in 18th century Japan. Daisaku Kimura is also a director of photography and worked as such on more than fifty film productions. He worked for many years with Akira Kurosawa, and is often compared with the famous Japanese director. The present film is produced by Toho, the most important film studio across Asia.

The opening night ceremony of the 42nd Montreal World Film Festival will take place on Thursday August 23, 2018 at the Imperial Cinema.
